Mon, 06/30/2014 - 11:30am - 1:00pm
Location:
E.L. Robinson Engineering, 1801 Watermark Drive, Suite 310, Columbus, OH 43215

*Open only to Central Ohio Section Members
*Seating is limited to the first 25 people
*Bring your own lunch

Purpose and Background
This webinar concentrates on micropile foundations. Micropile foundations are often a technically sound and cost-effective foundation choice where a deep foundation solution is appropriate based on site conditions, applied loads and project schedule and performance requirements. The LRFD platform offers a rational framework for consideration of micropile foundation systems. The webinar will use the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) LRFD Bridge and Structures Specifications as a basis for the technical content. Applicable articles in Section 10.5 and 10.9 of AASHTO LRFD Specifications will be used as a basis of discussion.

The webinar will include discussion on the terminology and construction of micropiles, identification of limit states and resistance factors, axial compression and uplift resistance of a single micropile, estimation of grout-ground bond resistance and tip resistance, group efficiency factors for evaluation of axial resistance of micropiles in groups, buckling and lateral stability, lateral resistance of micropiles in groups, evaluation of settlement of micropile groups, concept of cased, uncased and plunge lengths, consideration of extreme event limits state such as scour and seismic events, corrosion and deterioration, and typical structural detailing and design. The webinar will assume that the participant has a basic working knowledge of design and construction of deep foundations.

Kevin Carpenter (ASCE) discusses Ohio's roads and bridges on the radio

Kevin Carpenter was interviewed on a local radio program in Central Ohio, All Sides with Ann Fisher, about the state of Ohio's roads and bridges, and ASCE's infrastructure report card. Kevin is a member of ASCE, a former Region 3 governor, and past president of the Central Ohio ASCE section. Ann Fisher asked him about Ohio's bridges, and he described the reasons why ASCE rated them a C- and the challenges faced by the Ohio counties in funding bridge maintenance and replacement projects.

You can listen to the recorded program on WOSU's website.

OSIS Odor control facility

Topic: OSIS Downtown Area Odor Control Facilities

(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)

We will present this year's awards for Outstanding Civil Engineer of Central Ohio and Outstanding Section Member of ASCE Central Ohio, and hear about the OSIS Downtown Odor Control Facility.

The OSIS Downtown Area Odor Control Facilities project was devised in 2007 in response to complaints of odors through the downtown riverfront corridor. Engineering analyses determined that the source of the odors was the Olentangy / Scioto Interceptor Sewer (OSIS), which traverses the downtown corridor. Further analysis determined that bio-filters would be the most cost effective method of treatment. While odor mitigation was the main focus of the project, the odor control facilities will also provide ventilation for the OSIS Augmentation and Relief Sewer (OARS), which is a deep tunnel that will convey overflows from combined sewers to the Jackson Pike Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The presentation will cover the goals of the project, the field investigations performed to determine the odor source and sewer ventilation requirements, the design of the biofilter system, an overview of the construction process and an update on the performance of the facilities since construction was completed.

Civil Engineering Career Day - 2014

The Central Ohio Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is sponsoring a "Civil Engineering Career Day". The purpose of the program is to expose high school juniors to the profession in hopes that they may consider civil engineering as a career. In the past, the program has received national recognition from ASCE for the excellent exposure that the students and community receive as part of the program. This year the program will take place April 24, 2014.
