3-Day Seminar on Drilled Shafts
E.L. Robinson is presenting a three day seminar on Drilled Shafts in Columbus, Ohio, on August 19-21,2014. The seminar will be presented by Mr. Jerry DiMaggio and Dr. Jamal Nusairat. The goal of this course is to provide participants with specific technical guidance on all aspects of designing, installing, and monitoring the construction of drilled shafts.

Carolyn Merry, PhD, 1950-2014

With great sadness we share the news that Dr. Carolyn Merry was involved in a traffic accident Tuesday evening and did not survive.
Carolyn was an extremely active member of the Central Ohio section of ASCE. She helped coordinate our annual Civil Engineering Career Day, introducing dozens of high school students to the profession. She was a major contributor for the ASCE STEM Expo this year, introducing elementary and middle school students to the fascinating challenges of civil engineering. She spent many years as a section board member, and served as section president in 2002-03. She was also an active delegate in the Ohio Council of ASCE.
Her involvement in ASCE and the civil engineering profession has been extensive and transformative. As a long time professor of Civil Engineering and former department chair at the Ohio State University, Carolyn has been personally involved in shaping an entire generation of civil engineers. She was always willing to help the younger engineers and students. Carolyn was a significant contributor both in the collegiate and professional environment and she was highly supportive of the Columbus Pro-Musica chamber orchestra and the arts in Central Ohio. She will be greatly missed.
Her efforts have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Central Ohio ASCE “Outstanding Section Member” in 2003-04 and the “Outstanding Civil Engineer of Central Ohio” in 2013. Not only was she a great colleague but a dear friend to many of us.
Please keep her family and her husband Bob Redfield in your thoughts and prayers.
Creating Design Storms for Rainfall-Runoff Models

Purpose and Background
This webinar will cover the concepts related to creation of a design storm for use in hydraulic software packages, along with sources of rainfall data. Many projects require that a rainfall-runoff model be developed to determine the design flow for a storm sewer system, a detention pond, or some other hydraulic conveyance facility. This is typically completed using one of a variety of software packages, such as SWMM, HEC-HMS, or vendor software. These software packages require that rainfall information be input, usually in a time series; however, very little guidance is provided in the software packages on how to take the available rainfall information and create a time series that can be used in the software. Storm water design manuals usually include requirements such as designing for the 10-year, 24-hour event, or for the 25-year, 6-hour event, but provide no information on how to actually develop a design storm for these events. This webinar will cover the concepts related to creation of a design storm for use in hydraulic software packages, along with sources of rainfall data. The webinar will include examples of the different techniques so that attendees will be able to use them, along with appropriate rainfall data, to develop a design storm for any location.
