Topic: Caisson Failure Case Study
Joint Meeting Between SEAoO and ASCE
(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)
Bill will present his expert witness testimony in a case involving a caisson failure resulting in approximately 6” of settlement and significant damage to the building. The presentation will cover the many problems contributing to the failure and the “red flags” that went unaddressed by the parties involved, including the structural engineer, geotechnical engineer and inspection agency. The presentation will close with an interactive discussion on how lessons learned can be applied and preventative measures taken to protect your own projects. SEAoO and ASCE are pleased to invite you to join us for this valuable seminar.

December Dinner Meeting
Topic: Replacement of the Jeremiah Morrow Bridge
Joint Meeting Between ACI and ASCE
(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)
The Jeremiah Morrow bridge carrying I-71 over the Little Miami River near Lebanon is being replaced with an all-concrete, segmental, cast-in-place bridge using the balanced cantilever method with form travelers. The Jeremiah Morrow (named after Ohio’s ninth Governor) is the highest bridge in Ohio (240’) and one of the longest at 2,230’. The existing, twin steel deck trusses were built in 1964/65 at a cost of $5 million. The existing bridges are being replaced in two phases. The first of two concrete segmental bridges is currently being constructed in the median between the existing bridges. The existing bridges are very narrow (only 30’ wide); the new bridges will each be 55’ wide with provisions for 3 lanes of traffic in each direction. The new bridges will cost $88.1 million. HNTB Cleveland is the designer and Kokosing Construction is the contractor.

November Lunch Meeting
Topic: Designing the "LEED Gold" Grange Insurance Audubon Center
(Joint meeting between ASCE and OSPE)
(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)
The presentation will focus on the creative design strategies employed throughout this unique LEED Gold environmental education center. Site strategies for dealing with impacted soils, unstable subsurface conditions, and geo-thermal well challenges will be discussed. Innovative building strategies that take advantage of prevailing winds, daylighting and stormwater management will also be discussed. In addition, Michael will discuss the design team's use of integrated BIM modeling and simulation during the early stages of design.
Annual Joint Meeting of Ohio Northern University and University of Toledo
On behalf of the Ohio Northern University ASCE Student Chapter, I would like to cordially invite you to this year's Annual Joint Meeting. Though this event is typically in recognition of the ONU Student Chapter's relationship with the Toledo Section, we thought it appropriate to invite all surrounding sections, as the Central Ohio, Dayton and Cincinnati sections are of nearly the same distance away.

-*- UPDATE -*-
ASCE will be touring the Upground Reservoir on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 2:45. Construction is in the first of a three year project to place approximately 4.5 million cubic yards of fill to construct the embankments of the reservoirs. This 780 acre site will be the home for a 9 billion gallon reservoir – the largest lined upground reservoir in the country!
