Advancements in technology have allowed large complex geospatial datasets to be quickly and accurately analyzed in various engineering projects. Many components that need to be addressed in the course of a project from site selection, and topographic data interpolation to stake holder identification, and public communication have a spatial aspect that can be analyzed through the use of a GIS.

This session will give a basic introduction to some of the programs and tools that are available within a GIS. It will discuss basic interaction with other programs such as Excel and AutoCAD. It will also touch on some possible data sources, both publically available and privately obtainable, and give you real world examples where GIS technology have helped complete engineering projects.
