Metro School Internship Program

ASCE Members,

The Metro Early College High School (the Metro School) has an internship program for their students and they are looking for mentors and internship sites. This is an opportunity for you as a professional to help a young person fulfill their potential. Please read the message from Mr. Neugebauer below.

Dear Colleague,
My name is Cory Neugebauer and I am the Internship Coordinator for Metro Early College High School. Many of you receiving this email have participated in Metro’s Internship Program in the past (or have expressed interest in participating) and some of you are hearing about our program for the first time. To those who have participated in the past, let me extend my sincere thanks for what you have given back to our students. Hopefully you feel much has been returned to you throughout the experience that shows first-hand how your contribution is invaluable to the growth and development of our students. To those who have yet to participate, I invite you to become part of a very special experience that connects aspiring young people with real-world professionals in order to foster partnerships that will benefit you (your organization), our students, and our community.

It is a special experience for a professional to empower a young person to help fulfill their potential. One of the most significant ways successful professionals can “give back” is to share their career knowledge and leadership skills with tomorrow’s leaders--today’s students. I know as a former professional myself, serving in the U.S Foreign Service, few things can be more gratifying than empowering a young person to make a positive difference. In addition to giving back, our very capable students can potentially assist in supporting roles to facilitate the work of you and your organization. In these times of economic constraints, we can all benefit from this type of collaboration.

Metro’s Internship Program will continue its slightly revised format from previous years to increase the focus on the principles of professionalism, research/design, and building our students up to a more diverse skill set to take on greater challenges. The academic instruction and proactive Mentor-communication on the part of Metro will continue to be increased as the required number of on-site hours for the students is reduced. This is to increase the quality of the experience on the part of the students and the mentors/internship sites. The main thing to consider is if your organization has some sort of “on-going” inquiry/research project with which the student can observe and assist. All this is asking is if your organization asks a question about itself or has a challenge and is actively seeking an answer and/or solution. In this way, Metro’s Internship Program is applicable to a wide variety of fields.

For those who have participated before, Metro hopes that you wish to continue your positive experience with new, yet still very capable students in our Internship program. For those who have yet to participate, I hope you see this as a potential “win-win” scenario in which everyone walks away enriched from the experience.

Some basic facts about the program are listed below.

  • Students and Instructor will meet at Metro during the 2 weeks of school, Nov 29th -Dec. 10th, to focus on professional behavior/etiquette as well as pre-experience research for their specific internship site.

  • Starting the week of Dec. 13th, students will begin to complete their 60 hours (to be done on or off-site at the Mentor’s discretion) required by the program,
  • Once students have begun their hours, they will spend every Monday and Friday at Metro participating in lecture/reflection seminars. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, they will spend approx. 2 hours at their specific internship site.
  • The goal is to implement specific Habits/Training Modules (such as “Effective Data Collection” or “Design/Inquiry Process”) on Monday, then have the students see how that topic plays out at their specific site during the week, and then reflect on it on Friday with the instructor and other students.
  • The program will culminate with an Exhibition of students’ Final Project/Presentation, currently scheduled for Friday March 3rd. Students will be required to produce a standard, scientific poster and a 4-5 minute presentation on the inquiry/research being conducted at their particular site.
  • Students will be assessed through a series of written assignments based on the Habits/Training Modules, Mentor/Instructor assessments, as well as the Final Project/Presentation.

The success of Metro Early College High School’s Internship Program depends on professionals serving as Mentors. Please consider contributing to this innovative learning opportunity and truly making an impact in our students’ lives and our greater community.

I am eager to share more details about the program and look forward to communicating with you regarding your participation on behalf of our students.

Please email me to let me know that you (your organization) are interested in serving as a potential internship site for this coming trimester. If so, I can very quickly send you the course syllabus, the Mentor/Student expectations, and Mentor Evaluation Form.
