Evolution of Bridges

We can group all bridges into four basic types: girder bridges, suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges and arch bridges. Each of these bridge types has already existed for the last few thousand years. What are the differences between our bridges today and those built millennia ago?

Dr. Man-Chung Tang received his B.SC. degree from Chu Hai College, Hong Kong, in 1959, his Engineering Diploma in 1964, and his Doctor of Engineering degree in 1965 from the Technical University Darmstadt, Germany. Since then he has been working as a structural engineer designing bridges, buildings and other types of structures. He is currently Chairman of the Board of T.Y. Lin International, a consulting engineering firm with headquarters in San Francisco. He has been involved with the design, design review and/or construction engineering of over 100 major bridges in various parts of the world. “The sun never sets on his bridges!” He is an honorary professor at Tsinghua, Tongji, and five other universities in China, and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Dr. Tang was named by Engineering News Record as one of “The 125 top people in the industry in the last 125 years.” He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 1995 and an Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1996.
